The next five days passed quickly. Every moment Lucas wasn’t familiarizing himself with his new gear, he was busy studying the extremely detailed materials sent by Sangre. These included not only a rough timeline of the mission, the approximate route they’d be taking, and nearby emergency rendezvous points but also dossiers on all his soon to be squadmates, complete with full gear layouts, skill and personality profiles, and a number of videos demonstrating the members’ strengths and weaknesses in combat.

It was through this documentation that Lucas learned things, like how the swordsman Gutts had a tendency to charge a bit too deeply into the enemy and needed to be reminded to pull back so that he didn’t get overextended. Or how Wiley, the drone operator, had a touch of OCD and would often stop the squad to clean dirt and grime that had accumulated on his precious drones.

The packet also contained some personal details like how the squad’s long-range markswoman, Yoko, was extremely conscientious about a large scar she received on her first outing. Whether it was because of the actual scar or because of the lessons learned from that narrow escape, Yoko almost always kept the stealth features of her bodysuit activated during missions.

From the startling lack of criticism towards the squad leader, Lucas could tell that Sergeant Sangre had compiled the files himself. At one point, the document went so far as to call him ‘a brilliant commander always controlled and ready even in disastrous emergencies.’ Despite the obvious exaggerations, Lucas learned a lot about the Sergeant. He was extraordinarily cunning and meticulous, it would be impossible for someone to compile such detailed reports without such traits. These also happened to be exactly the qualities you’d want in someone leading a squad through the dangers of the wilderness.

By the time Lucas finished going through everything, he held a firm understanding of his squadmates, like they were old acquaintances even though he’d only met them once and even then only for a few minutes.

Finally, the big day arrived. Lucas woke up early and made it to the Western Station at sunrise. As Lucas expected, he spotted four familiar faces waiting out in front of the western branch of the Hunter Association. However, even though he recognized all four of them, only three were members of the hunter squad he met after his encounter with the charboar. The three were a large swordsman in a full suit of armor, Gutts, a lithe sniper in a tight bodysuit currently black but capable of adapting to any color and texture, Yoko, and an older grease-stained man with a large backpack and multiple sophisticated, many buttoned wristcomps, Wiley.

Sergeant Sangre was nowhere to be seen. Instead, there was a red-haired girl roughly Lucas’ own age, who Lucas immediately recognized from the hunter exam.

‘What the hell is she doing here?’ Lucas thought. He froze and was half a second away from running before a large hand waved at him.

“Hey, new guy. I forget your name but.
